--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
At Congregation Amchah, we offer
a personal and meaningful B’nai Mitzvah
program that allows children from any level of
prior Jewish learning to achieve and celebrate
their Bar/Bat Mitzvah.
In addition to traditional learning of the Torah
and Haftorah portions, through a guided independent
course of study, students learn about the joys
of our People, our Culture and our Torah. Studies
will also include discussions of the Holocaust
and the significance of the Jewish calendar and
our Holidays.
Six month’s prior to the Bar/Bat Mitzvah,
students begin learning their Torah and Haftorah
portions, so that when the big day arrives, they
will be able to confidently lead the Service.
One of your child’s most meaningful accomplishments
will be their Mitzvah Project. Not simply a canned
food or diaper drive, but rather, a project that
will have an impact on them and the community
they are a part of.
Each week (scheduling is flexible)
your child will meet with Dr. Kellie Marcus, our
teacher and Religious School Director, for half
an hour learning session. A significant part of
your child’s work will be independent reading
and writing assignments. Periodically, your child
will meet privately with Rabbi Winer for discussions.
Additionally, attending at least two Saturday
morning Shabbat Services per month is required.
This allows the student to become familiar with
the flow of the service, and to give them the
opportunity to practice the prayers. We encourage
you not to just drop off your child, but rather
to attend with them, enjoying the warmth and comfort
of the Service, together with your child.
As your child’s Bar or Bat Mitzvah approaches,
they will be called up to lead a prayer or reading
during the Shabbat Service. This will help them
become accustomed to speaking from the Bima and
addressing the Congregation. Again, we ask you
as parents to attend these Services with them,
enjoying the warmth and comfort of the Shabbat
Service. This will also provide a wonderful chance
for you to “Kvel” over your child’s
accomplishments. All this with the goal of making
your child’s celebration a unique experience
that they, you, your family and our Congregation
will take pride in.
